NEW EXHIBITIONS / OLD BUT NEW (THEY HAVE JUST REOPENED!)


#reopening 7 July through 6 September: Studi & Schizzi. Drawing the Human Figure in Italy 1450-1700 at the Fondation Custodia in Paris. The online catalogue can be found here.


#reopening Raphael in Berlin. Masterpieces from the Kupferstichkabinett has opened its doors again at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin and will welcome visitors until 23 August.


#reopening The Renaissance of Etching. From Dürer to Bruegel, at the Albertina until 1 November, is focused on the first 70 years of the etched print: Approximately 125 etchings will be presented along with drawings, printing plates, and illustrated books.


#newonview The exhibition 300 Years of the Kupferstich-Kabinett 1720-2020 celebrates the collection of drawings, prints, and photographs at the reopened Kupferstichkabinett Dresden. Among the more than 200 works from three centuries there is the amazing drawing by Jan van Eyck, "Portrait of an Elderly Man." Until September 14th. 


#newonview Highlights of Italian Drawing at the Rijksmuseum Print Cabinets at the newly re-opened Rijksmuseum presents drawings by great Italian masters such as Raphael, Michelangelo, Carracci, Barocci, Canaletto, and Tiepolo, on view until 23 November.


OPPORTUNITIES


The Italian journal Grafica d’arte is accepting papers for its 2021/2022 issues. The articles can address several topics relating to prints and drawings up to the XXI century, but the journal would be particularly interested in receiving texts discussing: coloured prints in 20th century; iconographic analysis on glory, indifference, rebels, self delusion; pest and pandemics; 20th century prints depicting actresses or dancers. The Association of Print Scholars invites submissions for the 2020 APS Publication Grant, which supports the publication of innovative scholarly research about printmaking across all time periods and geographic regions. funded through the Association of Print Scholars and the generosity of C.G. Boerner and Harris Schrank. Deadline: 31 August. For additional information, see this link.


Check out the CFP for panels at the Historians of Netherlandish art conference (Amsterdam/Den Haag, 2-5 June 2021): Media of exchange. Drawings and the transmission of ideas. Abstracts due by 1 July.


For the artists active around Florence (or wishing to travel there!): Activities have resumed at Il Bisonte Fondazione per lo studio dell’arte grafica in Florence where a new programme of workshops and summer courses has just been launched, for example Gumprint (11 July) and Linocut 16-19 July). More information here.


ONLINE CONTENT!


In 2016 the British Museum hosted a retrospective exhibition on Maggi Hambling “Touch: works on paper”. In this video, Hugo Chapman, Keeper of Prints and Drawings, taks with the artist about her exhibition and the stories behind the prints and drawings presented.


In this short video (posted in 2017) Carmen C. Bambach, Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York talks about Michelangelo's studies for the Libyan Sibyl, providing insights into their production and technique.


NEW ONLINE RESOURCES!


The Rijksmuseum published the online catalogue The Works by Hercules Segers in the Rijksmuseum, the most in-depth and comprehensive overview of all the works by Hercules Segers in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. The catalogue is based on the in-depth art historical and technical research that was done in preparation of the 2016-2017 Segers exhibition. For more information please see the press release. 


The summer issue of Master Drawings (Volume 58, Issue 2) is available online here for free. Among the artists discussed in this issue: Paul Sandby and Thomas Gainsborough, Thomas Wijck and Johannes Leupenius.


#morenews #contemporary #drawing. The Italian artist Giuseppe Penone, aligned with the Arte Povera movement, has presented two major gifts of his works on paper to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (309 drawings) and to the Centre Pompidou in Paris (350). Exhibitions of the works on paper are planned in 2022.
